"Watch used by the RAF pilots (British Air Force) Royal Air Force. In the creation of the English model of WTI the classic "broad arrow" watch was used as a reference which during the Second World War developed many Swiss watch brands for the British Ministry of Defence, such as Cyma, Eterna, IWC, Jaeger-le-Coultre, Lemania, Longines, Record, Smiths or Timor. The 'broad arrow' symbol is traditionally used in heraldry, especially in England, and is later used by the UK Government to mark government property. The British Army uses it in all its equipment. In 1939, with the war on the horizon, the British War Department realized it needed watches. Knowing that there would surely be a shortage of them, they quickly bought units from many Swiss manufacturers. All watches should have 15 rubies, white dials (although some were also requested with black dials or painted with radio), secondary dial for the second hand over the position of 6, steel or chrome boxes, and be waterproof. Most of the pocket watches were called "General Services" and classified as "Temporary Pattern". So they were sealed "GSTP" ("General Service Temporary Pattern"). The WWW (Wrist Watch Waterproof or Waterproof Wristwatch) were British Army Endowment Watches at the end of World War II. Twelve were the brands that provided the WWW to the British Army and were called the "Dirty Dozen": Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor, and Vertex. On the dial the broad arrow, and on the back the WWW acronyms are engraved, the Broad Arrow and the serial number, preceded by a letter that was different according to the brand of the watch."
