Does the thickness and weight of the door matter?

The way best explained is as long as the door is hung with the proper hinges and swings with no binding , you are good to go .

My door has a manual release handle to open it. Once the system is installed how do I keep the latch open so that the door can open and close?

usually the latch is removed and the door know or lever is kept in place. tou do not need a latch wit the DSW

Can I adjust opening pressure to increase it? Occasionally, door will open slightly and the close again. Door seems to open fine manually.

Great price point!
