Where do I find hanging folders that will fit in this frame? The width of the frame is only 11 1/2", most folders have 11 3/4" length.

there are only 2 standard frame sizes, standard and legal. my standard frame is 12 inches across the front and will accommodate ANY standard hanging file folders. ...Where did you get the frame? if you purchased a standard frame then the only conclusion is there may have been an error in assembly?

Can they stand alone without being put into a drawer?

They are best used in a drawer other wise they are wobbly becasue the stands are not wide and any weight on them might make them tip
