The second volume in Dante's Divine Comedy Beginning with Dante's liberation from Hell, Purgatory relates his ascent, accompanied by Virgil, of the Mount of Purgatory - a mountain of nine levels, formed from rock forced upwards when God threw Satan into depths of the earth. As he travels through the first seven levels, Dante observes the sinners who are waiting for their release into Paradise, and through these encounters he is himself transformed into a stronger and better man. For it is only when he has learned from each of these levels that he can ascend to the gateway to Heaven: the Garden of Eden. The second part of one of the greatest epic poems, Purgatory is an enthralling Christian allegory of sin, redemption and ultimate enlightenment. Best translation for first time readers
If this is your first introduction to the Divine Comedy then this is the translation you should get. Very readable with an excellent introduction and notes explaining everything you need to know to enjoy this great poem.

Mark Musa does the best translation of Dante
IMO, Mark Musa does the best translation of Dante. I read Dorothy Sayers' version and it was purgatory (sticking to rhyming couplets, iambic pentameter and a bizarre Provencal-to-Burns Scottish stanza). Musa keeps the meter but doesn't tie up with rhyming, nor going for medieval English as another translator decided. More accurate and, importantly, accessible as a result. Accompanying notes on the figures appearing in each chapter very helpful.

Read it!
It's not just a classic, it's mighty literature.

Challenging, but well worth the effort
A very challenging book, which I have had to read several times. An interesting journey through the origin of sin.

7/10.
The book itself is great. But someone scribbled on one of the pages in Biro. To a book lover such as I. That is sacriligeous!!
