The Most Compact n/m Adapter
These adapters (as sold by dgjiachen) conform to the "Full Handshaking" pinout described on Wikipedia (search for "Null modem"), so by-and-large will work with normal serial ports without any special settings. I have used one to connect a PL2303-based USB serial adapter to the serial port of a server so that I can do some startup troubleshooting via the console. Took advantage of the twin pack, as one shall inevitably go walkies when surrounded by envious techies curious about how I make fixes as close to the metal as possible...

Keep one with your usb-DB9 adapter
There are lots of serial devices wired to expect a modem connection, including most usb-db9 adapters. This is just what was needed for programming up my firewalls

Does what it's supposed to
Great alternative to any null modem cable. Takes up less than 1/2 " of space. No coiling of excess cable, just plug and play.
