How does the automatic circulation function work? My question is can I drop a can in there, hit the automatic button and walk away?

That mode continues to run, whether you have a can in there or not. If you are only crushing a single can, this is not the walk away mode. Automatic is when you are doing multiple cans. It pushes the plunger to the end of the chute and retracts it when it reaches the end. This process continues to repeat until you power off the unit or hit one of the other mode buttons to end Automatic mode.
