How powerful is the magnet, is it easy to shift when locked, hard, or very difficult? -- thanks

Magnet is very strong when locked. On a flat steel surface it woul take 2 hands to lever it off. When turned off there is little magnetic pull. Exactly as it should be. A total bargain from my Chinese friends. PS the dial indicator is really good and very sensitive. Total bargain, buy one!
