D6-320 External Hard Drive Enclosure 6-Bay (Diskless)

Not all enclosures play nice with Mac, this one does. Finding Thunderbolt, is rare, but also that has 6 bays & can handle 20TB drives is harder than you would think. This one handles all of that, and does it well. My only issue is that 10gbps is slower transfer than I hoped for, really wanted 80gbps, but TB5 enclosures are very rare. Even TB4 is very rare at this time. I appreciate the build quality, very solid, the box has some heft to it. The drive trays are all metal, slide in HDD, add 4 screws in the bottom to ensure rock solid stablity. The drives use the lever/latch method, which I prefer, really adds a solid feel and connection, which gives you easy access, and a solid lock down. Power supply meets the needs. The cooling fans keeps things cool, but run quiet. This box is compatible with macOS, Windows and Linux - options abound.

From the moment the TERRAMASTER D6-320 External Hard Drive Enclosure arrived, it promised simplicity and efficiency. Designed to partner seamlessly with large-format hard drives, it sparked excitement for what was to come. However, tech's unpredictable nature soon unveiled itself – a USB connection issue surfaced, casting a shadow of doubt. Was it the enclosure or something else? The plot thickened when the hard drive, purchased separately, was discovered dead on arrival (DOA). Here, Terramaster shone brightly, their customer support stepping in like the heroes of our story. They facilitated a swift return and replacement through Amazon, showcasing their commitment to customer satisfaction. Yet, the twist in our tale – the same USB mystery reappeared. Despite this, the enclosure soldiered on, functioning as intended, a testament to its resilience and quality. The only hiccup? A missing protective sleeve in the second shipment, a minor blip that required a dash of creativity to solve. In the end, the TERRAMASTER D6-320 External Hard Drive Enclosure stands as a beacon of reliability, backed by stellar customer support. While the journey had its ups and downs, the product delivered on its promise, albeit with a gentle reminder: in the world of tech, sometimes, you have to expect the unexpected (and maybe improvise a little). Pros: Reliable performance Exceptional customer support Cons: Potential USB connection mystery Packaging inconsistencies Final Verdict: A great product with a few quirks, the TERRAMASTER D6-320 is for those who value reliability and are ready to tackle minor challenges head-on. It’s not just about the destination but the journey – and this journey, with its mix of trials, tech, and terrific support, is well worth it.

In an effort to consolidate my external HDD management, I finally opted to purchase a proper HDD enclosure. I have a NAS for other uses, but I needed something that was a DAS (Data Attached Storage) for different drives that I would be rotating or didn't need on a network. This enclosure suited my needs. USB-C connectivity to my PC. 6 drive bays. Independent power and connectivity; that part is key. With the other 4-bay style top-loading HDD bays, if you pull one drive, the entire unit disconnects all the drives and you have to wait for Windows to detect what is in the other bays. With this particular enclosure, you can disconnect the drive in Windows, and the other drives remain powered and accessible. That's true hot swappablility. It's also going to let you transfer files as fast as the drives you have in there will let them. I should have gotten this sooner. Can't recommend it enough.

Bought in July 2024. Still working very well. Great price for a 6 bay DAS. I'm using with Win 11 Storage spaces. Two of the drives are set up in a RAID 1 config. The others are in a single drive config. Performance is very reasonable over USB 4. However don't expect super speed. If you REALLY need high performance use an internal SSD directly connected to the motherboard. I just need plain vanilla storage in a large volume with RAID configuration options and this serves me very well. To date, the drive configs have been stable with no issues. See enclosed benchmarks. I'm driving the Terramaster D6-320 with a Geekom A7 mini PC. I've moved from a tower case with a 750W power supply to the Geekom A7 and the Terramaster D6320 and I'm VERY happy. This config runs at a fraction of the power draw of my tower and is MUCH quieter.

Quiet fans, sturdy construction. The only issue I've encountered so far is the drives disconnecting from my Mac during long file transfers, causing them to have to be restarted.

Amazon groups items together for reviews that are not the same. The AI summary of reviews is nonsense. This is the D6-320, (6-bay, non RAID) and it does exactly what it says it does. Offers direct UAS access to all disks, full SMART data. I replicated a ZFS pool to a 4x10TB disk raidz1 in this unit, and it worked at full speed for 7 hours. Disks stayed relatively cool. Just plugged it in and started using it. Build quality is better than most other DAS. None of the JMicron-controller garbage in this one. Don't get the hardware RAID version.

EDIT: Going on two years of ownership (Dec 2025), and so far, the D6-320 has been doing well. One small issue I had was drives started to overheat (I had software to report on it). I noticed there was a decent amount of dust build up so I dusted it, and, bam, good as new. Just a reminder to everyone that especially if you have pets, set a calendar reminder to dust this thing. I currently have about 75 TB of total storage (using 5 bays in JBOD - as I use software to duplicate certain media I care more about). This has been pretty solid after about a year of ownership. it's quick, easy to use and no fuss direct storage. I use it for my plex server and it's been great. It's not too loud, and it fits in small areas, despite housing 6 drives which is nice. I find that it has adequate cooling. My only complaint is no power on AC Power Recovery option that I could find. Occasionally if I lose power at home, I have to manually go turn this back on. Since it's hooked up to a plex server directly, this ends up being a bit of a pain to remember, as I have Plex running as a service and AC recovery on that server, which turns back on perfectly - but I won't have any media until i turn this device on.

First of all, the reviews are conflating many different devices. The devices reviewed have notably different firmware and are designed and built differently. So the overall review is not really relevant. You'll have to wade though all reviews to find the ones applicable to the product you're considering. I'm just updating my review. I have been fighting for a few months to get it to work right. Thing is, no mater what, if you happen to transfer big files, or try simultaneous transfers, it will just fail to work properly and the USB control will be reset. The reset takes some time, so forget about any kind of throughput. The kernel messages seem to indicate errors in the processing of NCQ. Trying to disable it or limiting the queue depth is not allowed. I guess the firmware doesn't implement correctly those features. Another update. I have been writing firmware for devices for years. I would be embarrassed and ashamed to unleash a product that poorly done. It is missing key features that would make the product easy and reliable to use. For example, you don't seem to be able to get each disk unique identifier, the WNN. I could go further, but at that point you figured that the device is only half baked. Sure, it will work with a basic workflow and LOTS of hand holding. The heat is not extravagant, but substantial. Al in all a device where they cut so many corners to lower the price, that it is missing its usage target. I would NOT recommend it as a D.A.S.. Or anything else for that matter.

Well I had 5 external hard drives hooked up to my server, I ran out of electrical outlets so I wanted something to change that. This was seamless, I shucked all the external drives and popped them in. Connected the USB-C and started up the server. All drives remained the same drive letter and I was back in business. I added some foam on the bottom as the hard drives have quite a bit of vibration when spinning (Enterprise drives) and this reduced the noise to nothing. Transfer speeds/read write are limited to what the drives can read/write and not what the controller/interface can handle. Overall great product, solved my needs, simple to setup, and I have a free bay for later expansion. The hot swappable feature is also very nice to have.

Good specs. Well made. Everything works. I wish the box has better sound proofing. HDD clicking noise is amplified by the tin box.

Been running 6 drives for about a year now and no complaints! It will not power off if your PC continues to provide power over USB when shut down, but that's a limitation of some PCs--just putting the detail here to save some folks some trouble or confusion. Check your bios for settings, sometimes they're hidden.

I only have two large Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives in it so far but everything has been running nicely for the last few weeks. I’m using this with ZFS for my Proxmox host running on an Intel NUC, so this drive bay is great for this since I don’t have any internal expandability in the NUC for storage apart from its built in M.2 drive. Would be nice to have USB4 speeds for when I put two SSDs in a mirror configuration in too but at the moment I’m not close to saturating the 10 Gbps so can’t really complain. Anything like that is at least twice the price at the moment too so this chassis is great for the price.

Didn't work with SMART testing. But after firmware update it now fully functions. Refer Terramaster website for program to update for server compatibility.
