will it work on left or right side? can you put one on each side of the tailgate?

It works on the left side. I was able to put a second one on the right side of my 2007 F250 but I had to make modification to the right side of the tailgate take it work. But the F250 does nave a heavy tailgate so I felt like I needed the both and it did help. So depending on your vehicle I would start with the left side first before adventuring adding a second one

My bottom mount has come loose can you fix it?

No I had to take a large washer and a nut to fix it.
