This came as an enclosed circle, not an open U shape. What is the best way to get that open with a nice clean edge?

I would send it back! Ours came as a U Shape which is how it's supposed to be.

My table is 1/4" thick. Will this go over the edges?

Yes it will. Ours is a glass table 1/4” thick and it worked perfectly. We ordered brown and the color is more purple so beware.

Do you have to use the sticky tape (ie is it built in) or could you use it without tape (ie you add the tape on your own if needed)?

The sticky tape is not built in so you can use it only as needed. I used the tape as the item I was using it on is handled a lot by many people. It fits nicely on edges but could be dislodged if handled a lot.

I have a stone hearth, probably an inch think. Would this wrap around it? I think most glass tables are closer to half an inch so I'm guessing no.

My glass table is ¾ inches thick and it went on just fine. Highly recommend
