The Pocket Occupational Therapist for Families of Children With Special Needs Paperback – November 15, 2012

Being a pediatric occupational therapy assistant I needed a resource that was helpful for identifying all the "Occupational Therapy" needs for children. This book has excellent definitions of what OT is and also what we can do to help your children. This book gave me great ideas for what to do with the kids I was treating, but It was also a good resource to tell parents to get to understand better what their child needs and why OT can help them.

I was looking for further information about teaching adults who were diagnosed with Autism late in life. It is helping me to understand better the value of the occupational therapiet and giving me insight that is helping me.

It's a good book. It's easy to read, concise, and very informative. I imagine it's very helpful for those just starting out on the journey of special needs parenting. My son is now 9. I could have used this book about five or six years ago. There were only a few things in it that I could use now, but I did lend it to a friend for the chapter on feeding therapy. Her son is also a little older, like mine, but I think having some of the information provided there - such as the way our bodies react to certain tastes - might help her with her son's food issues.I'll probably donate it to my son's school or our local Parent Resource Center so that parents of younger children, who would most benefit from it, can have access to it.

This is a great introduction to pediatric occupational therapy and provides wonderful help and support to families of kids with special needs.Lindsey Biel, OTR/L

As an OT with over 20 years experience, I was amazed how much info is packed into this small book. It is so thorough, you would think it was a text book but it is just written concisely and is easy to read. For parents it is a great gift for those with a child just diagnosed with developmental concerns as it explains many terms used in therapy, gives suggestions on everyday activities to IEPS for school aged children. It is a great resource not just for parents but for therapists too, to help explain terms, give home suggestions and treatment planning. Thanks Cara for putting this together.

This book truly is like having an OT right in your pocket! The field of OT is so diverse, and this pocket guide touches on just about every area you can think of in regards to occupational therapy...from ADLs to fine motor to sensory integration. It is set up very well with a wonderful question and answer format. I especially like the "out of pocket activity" suggestions throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a child with special needs, particularly those just starting the journey.

I really needed help/ideas for my three year old having behaviors and this book was it. This easy to read, well-written resource guide is loaded with tips and suggestions any parent can utilize who either knows or suspects their child may have special needs. Also I've recommended it to other parents of typical kids because the book offers pointers/ exercises parents can use if they want their child to achieve a desired goal ie: trying new foods if you have a picky eater. A must-read for any parent!

This is an useful manual for parents and explains how to work on some key areas like writing, feeding and other daily life skills.
