The unit only tests for the existance of 60Hz power on a particular wire Amps don't matter A 50 Amp plug is 240v It has 2 hot lines at 120v each and 1 neutral and 1 ground Sometimes neutral and ground are the same with only 3 blades on the plug Anyway, bringing the tester near the outlet will tell you if it's live it won't tell you if there is a problem like one hot line being out or low voltage on either leg You would need a multi-meter and some training to do anything else A good poor man's tester is an old fasioned lightbulb 60w across one hot leg and neutral then the other hot leg and neutral If the brightness is the same for both then you're good
