What’s the point of both balls and rings? Would all balls be better?

They both are a medium to grow beneficial bacteria. The ceramic rings are more porous than the balls so grow more bacteria but doesn't float around like the balls do. Actually it's a matter of preference and the type of filter you are running. You can do some research on youtube to see which you'd like.

do you recommend using this as media during the initial cycle?

No one reason is , you want as much Bacteria in your tank from the cycling and the media will stop it, the porcelain is good for it but the the other Media is not

Can I put these bags behind the biocube 32 ?

Yes of course but you need to leave it in the bag just cut the zipper no metals in the water
