I had an intense exposure to old Japanese gardens (courtesy of 1950s U.S. Army posting in the Far East), journalistic coverage of modern work as magazine editor (mainly works of Friedberg, Zion & Breen, Halprin, Rolland...), and ritual visits to some famed landscapes of Europe. This should help balance my perspective on the subject.
