what is the best thing to use to open the cable gripper up thanks

Fingers work, needle pliers also or push a thick pen through the other end to open them out.

ive bought this product thinking i could connect to Females together and doesnt appear i can. Should i be able to?

There are male and female connections included. A male connection fits into a female connection. You cannot connect 2 males together or 2 females together. You could add 2 of the same connection to one cable at either end as long as they are being connected into the opposite connection.

Do these work ok on thin coax?

My guess is that they won't work. The cable gripper, as far as I can make out, is designed for standard co-axial cable and will not reduce sufficiently to grip a thinner cable.
