I have learn a lot with this book. It's good to be informed with a great book. Worth buy it!

Transformational - IF you make the choice for it to be. People generally know what to do, they just don't do what they know - or do they? In this book Dr. Amen covers a tremendous amount of ground. The title of the book "The End of Mental Illness" may throw off some readers, no spoilers here, but you could change the title to "The End of a Crappy Life", "The End of Unhealthy Lifestyles", "The End of Bad Choices" - it all still applies. The book is well organized and the "tiny habits" summaries throughout the book are game changers. No matter who you are, there have been days when you have felt like you are not 100% - in some cases that's even led to a professional diagnoses and some type of treatment (pill) that can go on for a lifetime; if not yourself, then you've certainly seen this happen to others close to you. But is that the right treatment? - in some cases, yes, but in many I would argue no - but I'm just a layperson and Amen is a MD so perhaps his opinions and thought will go a longer way than mine. Walk into any convenience store in America and you are bombarded with unhealthy choices that are STEALING your life away - we are literally being programmed by corporate America to purchase and consume products that are destroying our health and our lives - generational change - IN A BAD WAY. In addition to a slew of quality advice about healthy lifestyle and food choices that impact your brain and state of mind, Dr. Amen goes the extra step and offers some wisdom on how to expand that impact even further - imagine - a bunch of readers getting excited about getting healthy and taking action to do so - crazytalk! - surely that's someone else's job and my job is to sit back and talk about how bad the status quo is... - no it's not - READ, LEARN, ACT - get off your asses, make good choices, set a good example for your kids, spouse, family, co-workers, everyone. Lots of common sense in this book, not necessarily a lot of common practice (but could be). Preventable death and disease is of major concern to me - the costs are high in our society, and with the current COVID pandemic even more significant - how many people that contracted CV19 on top of pre-existing conditions (obesity, hypertension, diabetes, etc.) immediately wished they would have made better choices in life - for some it has been terminal - there hasn't been much time to wish... In Louisiana where we rank last or 2nd to last in just about every national ranking category related to wellness, this is a big problem. I put off reading this book b/c it's 448 pages long and I was thinking it would take a great deal of time to read, but I sailed through it in a week - it's a page turner. Doesn't matter who you are, young or old, married, single, no kids or kids - there is information in this book that can set you up for success, happiness, and health. Stop the sugar! Eat the veggies! Exercise! Sleep! Eliminate toxins! Highly recommend.

This book is very interesting. I am learning so much. I am reading it & using it like a text book. I am hopeful my son will see a neurologist so we can have an educated request to heal his brain. In the book towards the back there are things to do to improve your own brain health. The evidence is here. Have a healthy brain and you will have a healthy mind. The most powerful statement Dr. Amen makes is stating that psychiatry is the only medical practice that does not look at the organ it specializes in which is the brain. If you, a family member, children or grandchildren are being labeled in school, anywhere in their lives you truly must read this & know that dangers of mental health medications. That being said go to a neurologist perhaps they know a psychiatrist that will come on board for the treatment team. Dr. Amen is a firm believer that 4 areas in patients lives need to be addtessed. Biological, physiological, spiritual as well as social. He owns zero in pharmaceutical interests. Proves many meds do more harm then good. He admits meds he prescribed hurt his patients. He stands fast on nutraceuticals versus pharmaceuticals. Some meds he states improves the symptoms temporarily but most are dangerous in the long term use. In very few cases does he use medications. These harmful meds are essential a cheap.bandage versus healing the root cause of the issues of concern. Healthy brain=a healthy mind= a healthy life.

Good book. Little concerned that these books are just an ad for the guy’s clinics, but by and large I do believe he is correct about brain issues being the cause of mental illness, so it’s not all bad. It’s well written but again, feels too much like an ad.

The End of Mental Illness has got to be the most POWERFULLY enlightening book ever written by Dr. Amen. The content truly initiates a massive revolutionary paradigm shift in the way mental health is viewed. It as if the veil has been lifted and the blinders have been opened. The awareness that has been revealed in this book is mind blowing. This neuroscientific approach truly is revolutionary and this book is a must read for every single person that has ever been touched by the disease of mental illness. It completely erases the stigma that is attached to mental illness and develops a compassion and understanding towards one another. If you are a behavior health professional, this book is an absolute must read and will make a massive impact on the lives of your clients and patients. As both a mother of a son with substance use disorder, and a professional addictions counselor... this book changes everything. Everything. As a professional, I have done my research, and have found this book to be based accurately on evidence-based research and the largest database of brain imaging research that has ever existed. The credibility and authenticity speaks for itself when you see the lives that have been transformed in addition to the extensive scientific evidence.

This book is actually very useful for human development, clinical mental health students and anyone who is seriously interested in understanding the brain. A good book to add to our library. I do not know if someone who does not understands much of medical vocabulary would like this book. It is not a self-help book. This book is for people who already have at least a basic understanding of the brain (anatomically, physiologically and psychologically), otherwise you will probably get bored, confussed and wont like this book. With that being said I liked how this books takes a look at and explains what many psychiatrists fail to look at....the "reasons behind the cognitive disorders, psychological disorders and the behavior." Many psychiatrist just go by what the DSM-5 says, but they ignore the fact that sometimes the person's mental issues is not an illness but something else such as lack of blood flow to the brain, head injuries and expossure to toxicity. Many people get prescribed antipsychotics, when in reality they never needed them and all they needed was a good mental health doctor to care enough and keep digging to find out the root of the problem. Once a person starts using antipsychotics there is no turning back in many aspects, at least it wont be that easy to stop taking the medications without having side effects. This is why this book is so interesting!!

There is a lot of information that is very much useful, if implemented in our live, could keep our brains healthy.

Loved all of the insights in the book. A lot of great reminders, and a few new negatives of information that I didn’t know before. Definitely worth the read for anyone who wants to be a better version of themselves as well as for other people around them.
