Pedaling it too vigorously will cause it to slide and move from side to side. For your information, a strap is also provided with the exerciser. You can use this to strap the exerciser to the chair - thus preventing it from slipping and sliding while you are using it. I hope this clarifies your question. I like the product and think it is worth checking out. It’s not a big investment money wise and you can always send it back within a reasonable amount of time if it is not to your liking.

Q: Given my height is 5'3" how do I determine how far forward to place the device?

The device is very light--around 5-6 pounds--and lends itself well to how far away to place the device from one's chair, since it involves picking up the exerciser and manually placing it where one wants it; a trial-and-error kind of thing. I am tall (6'2") and like to stay back a bit. A 5'3" person might want to be a little closer, more on top. Once it is placed the device is very stable, especially if used on pile carpet.
