Can this be operated independently without a computer or is it required?

You can use the microscope without a computer. It's just a microscope that has the option to attach a camera. The camera is what hooks up to the computer. The microscope can be used independently.

Can I download software for the camera online? I do not have a disc drive.

You may find the download at https://www.microscopenet.com/software_downloads.php (A35 series)

Do I need to buy an additional camera to connect to my computer or does everything come with the microscope?

Don’t buy this product. It’s simply horrible quality.
