Can you put candy in this toy

Yes, my kids were able to pick up small candies (i.e. jolly ranchers).

Will it pick up Gift cards?

I never tried but it's highly unlikely with the claw design.

My kids got this for Christmas. How do you make the claw open? It stays closed and we don't see a way to open it

The best I remember is to drop the crane into the opening. You need to reach in and open it with your hand. Then it will start working. My niece has it but I remember having to do that.
