Which comes on first hi or lo beam?

Low beam, half-click/full-click for low, and one more time for high.

Will this work with a rechargeable AAA?

Get yourself a 10440 rechargeable and thank me later. This little light puts out 500 or more lumens on high running a 10440. I recommend the Efest and staying away from anything with 'fire' in the name.
