Is it safe to leave this projector on for 8-12 hours straight?

No. Product is cheap and terrible quality overall. It will probably just die within 1 hour on you. Don't buy it.

Does this come with the light bulbs you need? What does it need aside from batteries?

I bought this as a gift for my friend and after putting it all together and turning it on in a completely black room, we were very disappointed. It looks nothing like the pictures and I wouldn't recommend buying it. The light bulb and everything you would need is included to answer your original question.
