Is the brown like the color of Chocolate? It looks black on the picture.

Mine are definitely BLACK not brown.

Is it made of genuine leather or synthetic leather?

No, its synthetic. The leather ones I found were over $200.00, but this is a nice substitute if you don't want to spend a fortune.

I was wondering about the narrow band that runs along the top of the pad. Is this feature meant to hold papers? Does it flip up or is it stationary?

It does flip up to hold anything you want such as papers, note pad etc. Right now mine is holding a small flat calendar. It is convenient feature to have. I really like my pad, hope you like yours too.
