No...it appears to be made of an acrylic-type substance. I would have liked it more if it had been glass.

I bought this product 3 years ago, the price is per one item; the size (2.75in X 2.75in X 2.75in) refers to the dimensions of the box that contains the prism. A lot of fun for sure!

if i put it above the light bulb in my lamp shade would it create the illusion of a rainbow beam?

I believe it should be possible to get the rainbow effect with a lamp but the trick is to get it at the right angle to get the desired effect.

Is this crystal really not crystal?

If you think about it, the "crystal" that most people think of when they think of prisms is cut glass, which is not actually a crystal, but is amorphous. Acrylic, which this prism is made of, also is amorphous and non crystalline. A true crystal is anisotropic and would be less optimal than either glass or acrylic for making rainbows. So the answer is, "No, it isn't crystal, but it works fine for separating white light into its constitutive colors."
