ClassiQuest Science: Logic Stage Astronomy & Geoscience: Solid Science for the Classical Curriculum

I am giving this 4 stars because we are very impressed with the thoroughness of this science curriculum. I love the timeline, famous people, important words, and weekly labs. I think my 6th grader is really getting a firm understanding of each topic. That said, there are a few things I don't like or would give a homeschooler pause before purchasing. What I don't like is the cost of the "full" curriculum. This book is just the skeleton. To really utilize it you need to purchase upwards of 4-5 additional books which is quite costly for a homeschooler. I think this 1 subject cost me about $75 and I only purchased 2 of the recommended encyclopedias. I am justifying the cost because I have 2 others who will use it after my 6th grader. Not having a Day 1, Day 2, etc plan in the book is a tad daunting if you are new to this style. A recommended lesson plan of how to tackle all the material in 1 week would be great. This is not an "out of the box" curriculum. And lastly, there is no "test" to verify that your student is grasping the material. Yes, there is memorization and a timeline, etc but applying those things to the subject matter seems important.**Update** After 28 weeks, I must say I am still enjoying this curriculum. We have learned a lot (yes, I have too!). The writing is intense, though, as each week there is a science report. We will move onto the next in this series though because I LOVE how thorough this curriculum is.

Every year of the grammar stage I felt like I was recreating the wheel for science in order to stay faithful to the classical teaching model I use to homeschool my children. I was thrilled (and relieved) to find ClassiQuest when my kids entered the logic stage. It's everything I want in a science curriculum! It follows the WTM recommendations to the letter, it leaves lots of room for personal touches when it comes to areas of faith, it gives a great list of all supplies needed and where to get them, and pulls everything I could ever want together into one neat and user friendly format for every lesson. I love it and am so grateful for it. I'm desperately hoping chemistry is ready and out by next fall so we can use it. Seriously, if I were to pull together everything I wanted to accomplish for science for the year in my wildest homeschooling dreams - and I had the time to do so - it would look like what Angela DuBois has created. Its such a timesaver and so handy. It's exactly the way we like doing science. And as far as what some other reviewers have said regarding the other texts and supplies needed, the product is exactly what it says it is. If you read the early pages that you can see online, I believe you can see all the materials needed. I found them either free at my local library or reasonably priced online. This book is worth every cent.

I think it is misleading for this item to be listed as a science curriculum. It is a planner at best. I would say an excellent planner, but definitely not a science curriculum, that is just my opinion. The book is laid out well, but you absolutely must purchase other books, as that is where the actual lesson information comes from. I can definitely appreciate the time that was put into this book, it tells you what pages to read in the additionally purchased books, and bases lessons off of those readings. I am looking for straight forward text, where you read information, do experiments, and all necessary information is contained in on text. I do not regret the purchase, because of the easy return. This book may work for some, it depends on your style of homeschooling. Science has always been a tough subject for me to teach, I require a lot of straight forward direction.

Our family uses the classical model of education as laid out in the Well-Trained Mind, and this science has done all the work for me! It is thorough, and it's all there.... the experiments, the timeline, memorization, latin and greek roots, writing reports... I love it! It uses the resources suggested in Well-Trained Mind as well. I am using this for several of my kids to do together. Thank you, Angela DuBois for simplifying my busy homeschooling days!
