Brake shoes are a type of brake that uses a block of friction material attached to the end of a metal plate to create the friction necessary to stop a vehicle. The most common type of brake shoe is the drum brake, which wraps around the outside of a drum-shaped component on the wheel. When the brakes are applied, the shoes press against the drum and slow the wheel.
