Extending the Linear Model with R (Texts in Statistical Science)

The most useful aspect is the R code presented which can be modified for personal use. The examples used tend to be disjointed and the explanations assume a reasonable understanding of basic statistics and mathematics. A useful text.

Not easy to follow(in depth) if you do not have good basics in algebra, but it's the effort for very advanced book on liner models.great workthanks

Not as thorough as Linear Model with R. Very disappointing

I found the text to be unsure of its purpose. At times it felt like a tutorial on how to do various techniques in R (which is more what I wanted), but at other times it included very advanced mathematical analysis requiring knowledge of calculus and partial differentiation but provided in such a terse form that it was difficult to discern its meaning (and, yes, I know calc). It was thus judged highly inappropriate for a graduate level advanced modeling class for psychology students. Frankly, however, I'm not sure what audience it would be best for.

I was looking for something to build on my knowledge of linear models, in particular I was interested in learning about mixed effect models. However, this book assumes a great deal of prior knowledge about the subjects covered. While it may be good as a reference for those who have already looked at such modelling techniques in my opinion it isn't accessible for someone who is looking for an introduction into these more advanced techniques. I feel the title Extending the Linear Model is misleading suggesting a more introductory paced read on the topics covered. Worth noting I don't have a lot of formal statistical training and most of my knowledge comes from self study, which may have put me at a disadvantage in trying to make sense of the material provided.

The explanations are thorough but comprehensible, without too much jargon. The R code is clear and the results easily reproducible.My only disappointment is that the book clearly states that solutions to the exercises are available, in fact on the back cover it says that they are included. I was unable to find any solutions in the hardback copy, which was very disappointing, leaving you with the usual problem of mathematics textbooks of not really being confident that your answers to the practice exercises are correct.
